Our Place @ Merlin Woods was one of three pilot projects as part of An Artist in Every Place, a flagship legacy project curated by Neil Butler, Artistic Director of UZ Arts and produced in partnership with TULCA Festival of Visual Arts for Galway 2020. Participating artists included Glasgow-based Visual Artist Maria McCavana, and Galway-based artists: Theatre-maker Féilim O’hAoláin, Sculptor Debbie Reilly, Theatre-maker/Story-teller Catherine Denning and local musicians and artists curated by An Áit Eile.

Description: The project comprised a number of 8-week artist residency projects in and around Merlin Woods, prior to a 2 day festival of theatre, music, performance and visual arts showing their work. The aim of the project, which was inspired by community liaison officer Caroline Stanley, was an invitation to the people of Galway city and county to collaboratively discover and re-discover its magical Merlin Woods as an amenity for the whole community and to bring together three suburbs of the city through art.
Visual arts woodworking/harvesting project, creating an environment and archeological camp – the space was created to encourage young people in the woods to join in by creating their own space.
Theatre / story telling workshops and events – the children created the story, and designed costumes
Poetry Reading – Friends of Merlin Woods engaged with people from the Community Garden. All ages took part, telling stories based around the Grandfather Tree.
Music, circus workshops, yoga, and a mixture of different cultural events.
Created a map of the woods for visitors
Maria Mc Cavana, installed site-specific text-based tapestries in the woods using conversations she had with people on walks in the woods.
